Who is Barbara Hogan?
The New Health Minister: Barbara Hogan grew up in Benoni, an industrial town. She was the first woman to be elected as a Junior Deputy-Mayor in South Africa. Arrested for the first time in anti-government protests at the age of 18, she became a student activist and joined the embryonic black trade union movement that was later to emerge as COSATU, the largest trade union federation in South Africa. In 1977, Barbara joined the banned, underground political wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1981 she was arrested and sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment for High Treason for so-called political offences. Her release came in 1990, one week after the unbanning of the ANC. Elected to Parliament in 1994, she served as Chair of Finance Portfolio Committee and the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General and helped draft the financial clauses of the new Constitution. Appointed as Minister of Health in 2008.

Her deputy, Sefularo, is very good as well!

My concern and question regarding this latest appointment is that should we not have a health minister who actually fulfils the portfolio of "health". I don't know much about Barbara Hogan and not sure of her background in terms of health care, but couldn't her affiliation to this makes things easier. I've often wondered how they choose Ministers? Anyone for some insight?
Excellent news. Saw message from TAC as well which welcomes these new appointments.
She came to stay with us in London before I came to live in SA and she was a really nice person and very committed I am sure she will make things better in health
She is brilliant and she definately deserves it.
My claim to fame: Barbara Hogan and I are both from Benoni (together with Charlise Theron!) I was with Barbara at university, and comrades in the 70s. She is a most hard-working, committed, dedicated woman, with absolute integrity. She was outspoken about HIV and Mbeki's denialist stance. Her success in health will hinge on her advisers, but I am sure her political astutenes will ensure this.
She has done well in other dpts, I'm sure she'll do even better in health.
All of that is great and leaves everybody feeling all warm and fuzzy.....one question.......WHERE ARE THE FEMALE CONDOMS MINISTER? TAC'S WOMENS SECTOR - WHERE ARE YOU? SANAC WOMENS SECTOR - ARE YOU THERE? DO YOU EXIST???????
